Commemoration of World Youth Skills Day

The United Nations General Assembly, based on the proposal spearheaded by Sri Lanka has declared July 15th as the “World Youth Skills Day”. The goal of this proposal was to achieve better socio-economic conditions for today’s youth including as a means of addressing the challenges of unemployment and underemployment. Subsequently, at the 18th SAARC Summit , SAARC leaders agreed to commemorate same by the SAARC Member States.

Today, Sri Lanka provides vocational training to nearly about 100,000 youth through different training providers. At present, the State Ministry of Youth Affairs provides employable skills through the National Youth Services Council, Youth Corps and the Small Enterprises Division of the Ministry.

In commemoration of the first ever “World Youth Skills Day” the State Ministry of Youth Affairs throughSmall Enterprises Division and the National Youth Services Council held an entrepreneurial skills awareness training for the trainees of the National Youth Services Council Training Centre at Kolonnawa. About fifty trainees participated at this program.

Special awareness forums were conducted by the Youth Corps for selected Senior students in schools in several districts. Evolution of the World Youth Skills day, importance of vocational training along with leadership and personality development, available employment opportunities for youth importance of entrepreneurial skills development to become young entrepreneurs etc. were discussed at theses forums. More than thousand students participated to the event representing following schools.
