National economy could be strengthened through encouraging small entrepreneurs

Minister of Youth Affairs, Mr. Niroshan Perera said that the national economy would be strengthened through supporting small entrepreneurs in our country. He said so, on last Friday (27th) at the Bandaranayake Memorial International Conference Hall premises in Colombo.

Minister stated these views after the opening ceremony of “Entrepreneurship – 2015” educational and trade exhibition organized by the Small Enterprises Development Division of the Ministry of Youth Affairs. The exhibition was held on 28th and 29th at the Bandaranayake Memorial International Conference Hall premises in Colombo.

The prime objective of this trade exhibition is to strengthen nascent entrepreneurs dispersed all over the island economically by bringing their products, creative skills and competencies to the BMICH, which is the largest Conference center in the island.

Small Enterprises Development Division was founded in year 1981 under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Employment at that time, based on a concept on the minister of youth affairs and employment at that time, Mr. Ranil Wickramsinghe with the objective of building a national entrepreneurship culture through development of the entrepreneurship skills. Small Enterprises Development Division Functions as a separate division of the state Ministry of Youth Affairs at the present and continuously provides services relating to entrepreneurship development by carrying out official work in district secretariats including North, Eastern Provinces.

Minister, Mr. Niroshan Perera also said,

Employment Opportunities need to be created for the development of our country. Employment Opportunities cannot be created without constructing the national economy.Small Entrepreneurs are significant in building local economy. Macro entrepreneurs often not the local entrepreneurs. Therefore, it is extremely important to encourage small entrepreneurs for the development of local economy.

A Small Enterprises Development Division under the Ministry of Youth Affairs was established for the first time when the current prime minister, Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe was working as the Minister in charge of the relevant subject. This measure initiated in small scale has now grown to large scale measure that has been expanded and scattered throughout the island. Economists identify small enterprises as the spine of the national economy. We will do our best as a government which holds the enthusiasm, dedication to uplift the local economy to encourage small entrepreneurs. We will propose to provide extensive lone facilities and other provision in the next budget for these entrepreneurs.

The Exhibition was opened under the distinguished participation of Mr. Eran Wickramasinghe, Deputy Minister of Highways and Investments, on the first day (27th) on the second day (28th) Mr. Gayantha Karunathilake, Minister of Mass Media and on the third day (29th) Mr. Wijayadasa Rajapaksha, Minister of Justice. Minister of Youth Affairs, Mr. Niroshan Perera as the Minister in charge of the subject, Mrs. Nilanthi Sugathadasa, Secretary of the Ministry, Director of the Small Enterprises Development Division Mr. Sudheera Jayarathna and other personnel participated in this occasion.
